I was going to do it by hand but now i've decided i'll pay someone to do it professionally, becasue i know it will come out way better than if i do it by hand with cheap products, $80AUD TO $150AUD will be worth paying.

you mentioned that the clear coat prevents the paint from oxidizing, with the new cars today can the top coat turn a bit white/hazy from oxidation or is that eliminated with new car paint process today? and if it does get oxidized is the actual clearcoat getting oxidized or the paint underneath? also are you actually taking some of the clear coat off with say a 1 step or 2 step paint correction with a DA polisher? thanks for your time

Hi, amazing detail and info - thanx probably a rookie question but what is Compound and then Polish ? Are they two different things ? If yes, which compound and then polish (brands) did you use ? And if there’s any other similar brands for compound only and polish only . I use Formula 1 Polishing compound and then formula 1 wax - step 1 and 2 basically, Am I doing it wrong please guide ?

I went back to polishing/waxing by hand. Except for large flat surfaces like the hood, it's actually faster and easier doing it by hand. Way more maneuverable and accurate around mirrors, tight areas, curvatures and plastic trims you want to avoid.

In a comparison between Sonax Ultimate Cut 6+1/3 vs Laser Perfect Cut +2 Stage Finish I have to say I have a w203 that has a dark green metallic paint , name of the paint is Andraditgruen . The pervious owner ruined the paint with a very bad polish product ( unknown to me ) . Every time I wash the car it instantly gets so so dirty it’s like the paint is so exposed and got no layer nor protection , it’s like the polish applied before was null , so in a very bad condition . So now I have decided to do it on my own since I’m the city no one is good enough but all they care for is about money . Any suggestion ? What to do and not to do ? What tools I need for hand polishing ? What other products I need ? Is the products I mention good for my case ? Thanks in general !

Interested to see the difference between a battery powered and normal polishing machine. I don’t have easy access to a wall outlet. Love this video. I have performed the clay + 3 step process last year by hand. Clay, clean, polish and finish with wax. But was not happy enough after spending hours. I’m thinking to buy a machine and add the step to applying compound as well to be able to remove the big scratches now I have seen this video.

Is there a danger of taking off the clear coat completely when compounding? I have a classic Beetle that gets a haze quite often on the roof and wings. I clay, polish and wax, but after a month the haze returns? Why is this? Does the clear coat need redoing?

Thanks!

Do you then have a video about how to use a DA polisher, and which one is best for absolute beginners who have never seen anyone use one, except on SEmost? I was looking at the Griot's G9. What are the best compounds and polishes for total newbies? I don't have any background in this, but my paint looks like junk from sitting outside in the elements for 13 years and never having any type of decontamination, short of what I've done lately from learning about all of this teaching myself through SEmost videos. People like you are really helping us all out significantly. Thank you!

Hello and thank you for this video. I am of that "generation" that grew up being taught to compound, polish and wax by hand. Until I saw your video, I was going to do all my vehicles by hand, no longer. Questions: What DA is the best for doing all three stages? What size backing is suitable? What brands are worth their weight and which to stay away from? Do you recommend a cordless or corded DA? Thanks again for the video.

Great video, but I only wash and polish by hand because it's more detailed, takes less paint layers off and more delicate. If you use a hand powered tool, you take off 0.3/0.4 of paint, while hand you don't take off nothing. Use less salty polish and wash, use the softest lint cloths to polish and buff up. That's my theory. Most car Showroom around the world still use hand wash and polish. Interesting to see this, well done....

Im having great results with a DeWalt 12v cordless, Amazon pads, and Turtle Wax conventional waxes including scratch remover and polishing compound. Actually, probably the best results short of paint or color correction via wet sanding or other methods. This is on a 18 year old vehicle with original paint. The product isn't as important as the process. You can get great results with cheap products.

This was interesting Larry. Could you do one more step, two I guess, and measure the thickness of the paint before and after for both methods? I hand polish old paint because there is not as much left. Also, cars that you intend to own, 25 years plus, may benefit from just hand polishing, again, just to preserve the material. Also, one way to save energy when hand polishing is to relax your face, haha. Did you see your grimace? Were you really pushing that hard or was it theatrics? Anyway, thanks for the info.
